KOLKATA: Jadavpur University’s executive council — the highest administrative decision-making body — on Saturday took note of the suggestions mentioned in the admission report of humanities departments and decided to refer the matter to the internal admission committee of the university. The recommendations were made by an external committee set up after last year’s admission fiasco. The committee comprised a retired high court judge and former vice-chancellor of CU, Asutosh Ghosh.“The report was already placed before the EC at the last meeting but could not be discussed due to the student agitations. Also, some of the EC members wanted time to go through the report. On Saturday, after placing the report once again, it has been decided to refer the matter to the humanities admission committee. Even the report, after all its suggestions, has mentioned the ultimate decision making authority for admission-related matters was the internal committee,” said a source. Some teachers had earlier said that the external committee has suggested the same 50-50 pattern — like last year — should be followed during the admissions this year too.“Fifty per cent weightage will be given to the HS marks while the remaining should be on the admission tests in all the six arts subjects,” the teacher privy to the report submitted to VC Suranjan Das said.Sources, however, indicated the external committee has viewed the JU admission committee can take all decisions regarding admission procedure.“They don’t want to overrule the admissions committee. Any modification made by them is valid and legal, says the report,” a source added. Once the report is accepted by the humanities admissions committee, the matter will be placed before the EC for ratification purpose only, the source pointed out.
