Kolkata: Met predicts warm spell set to break with rain

A low pressure over north Bay of Bengal could follow, leading to more rain on July 1 and 2, predicted the Regional Meteorological Centre

KOLKATA: The warm and humid spell in Kolkata is set to break this weekend, said weathermen. Showers triggered by a low-pressure trough and a cyclonic circulation are expected to bring relief to the city and south Bengal on Sunday.

A low pressure over north Bay of Bengal could follow, leading to more rain on July 1 and 2, predicted the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC). The city has received scanty rain ever since the delayed onset of monsoon on June 21. On Friday, Kolkata remained cloudy and received a light afternoon drizzle.

A few spells of rain could lash the city on Saturday, too, said RMC director G K Das. “A low-pressure trough extends from northwest India to Nagaland through Bangladesh. This has led to the formation of cloud cells on Friday, which floated into south Bengal from Bangladesh, leading to a cloud cover.

On Saturday, we expect the trough to slide south, closer to Kolkata, and a cyclonic circulation over west-central Bay of Bengal and Odisha to slide up. The twin effect could lead to rain on Saturday,” said Das.

He added that more persistent showers will be caused by the low-pressure over north Bay of Bengal. “It should develop on Sunday and lead to rain till July 2. But the rain will be heavier in districts adjoining Odisha — East and West Midnapore and Jhargram.

Kolkata should receive light to moderate rain,” said Das. The slow-moving monsoon currents could also be revived, he added. The delayed onset of monsoon is set to leave Kolkata and south Bengal with a substantial rain deficit in June. The arrear — which stood at 64% for Kolkata and 60% for Gangetic Bengal till last week — could be more than 40% for the month, said weathermen.
