Kolkata to receive heavy showers today

The system, which is set to intensify into a depression over the next 48 hours, could also cause heavy showers across eastern and central India, it has been predicted.

KOLKATA: The city could be lashed by a spell of heavy shower on Monday. But the rain could be reduced to a drizzle on Tuesday even as neighbouring Odisha is pounded by heavy showers triggered by a lowpressure over northeast Bay of Bengal.

The system, which is set to intensify into a depression over the next 48 hours, could also cause heavy showers across eastern and central India, it has been predicted.

Kolkata, however, will not be affected much.“The low-pressure is expected to move to north Bay of Bengal from northeast Bay on Monday. Once it does, heavy rain will follow across south Bengal, which includes Kolkata and the coastal districts of North and South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore and Jhargram. It will have a much bigger impact on Odisha, though.

Kolkata may receive heavy rain on Monday but just light to moderate showers on Tuesday,” said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director GK Das.He added the system is set to move into the land and trigger rain across the eastern and central region.

“After affecting Odisha, Bengal and Jharkhand, it will travel towards Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh causing rain in those states. In fact, the impact of the system could last through the week and help to revive the slow-moving monsoon currents,” said Das.

On Sunday, the city remained overcast as cloud cells generated from the low-pressure floated into the region. The delayed onset of monsoon is set to leave Kolkata and south Bengal with a substantial rain deficit in June.

The arrear — which stood at 64% for Kolkata and 60% for Gangetic Bengal till last week — could be more than 40% for the month, said weathermen.

Kolkata received excess rain last June but had a narrow deficit in June, 2017. The normal rain count for June in Kolkata is 278mm. So far, Kolkata has received just 53.5mm as against a normal of 169.8mm till June 19.
