There was massive traffic on EM Bypass, Ultadanga Main Road and CIT Road on the better part of Tuesday evening after the Ultadanga flyover which connects airport-bound traffic on EM Bypass with VIP Road at Lake Town was shut to both-way for at least three days after a crack was found by inspection.

The inspection team found the cracks on the same span - a 40-metre curved street structure - that had collapsed in March 2013, which led to the closure of the flyover for around one and a half years.

Following the inspection, the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority officials shut down the arterial flyover. The commuters could face traffic jams in various parts of the city for the next three days.

The advisory notifies alternative routes that commuters can take

"There is no need to panic. The flyover should serve for 30 years, but we need to probe why repeated cracks," Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said.
