Kolkata: The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission (WBCERC) has imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on a medical super-speciality hospital after it found some negligence on the part of the hospital authorities. The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission has asked the hospital authorities to transfer the compensation amount to the account of the deceaseds son. It was learnt that one Shukla Pal, an elderly person from Balurghat was brought to the Medica Superspeciality Hospital on July 13 in 2018 for dialysis. She was taken to the outpatient department. She had been suffering from kidney related ailments with impaired renal function. The nephrologists who attended the patient advised dialysis. The patient was admitted to the hospital. She was taken to the dialysis centre for making a channel in her right vein in the neck. During treatment the patient eventually died on July 29. Following the death of the patient, her family members alleged negligence against the hospital authorities. They later lodged a complaint with the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission alleging the medical negligence led to her death. The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission carried out a detailed probe into the death of the victim. After a thorough investigation it found that the doctors tried to make a channel in the right side of her neck. In its observation the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission said that the doctor mistakenly punctured the right carotid artery with needle. When the doctor realized the mistake he immediately withdrew the needle and tried to accomplish haemotasis by pressure and the application of ice. The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission made its observation saying that there were flaws in making the channel during the dialysis. The patient later developed respiratory distress and shifted to ICU where incubation was done and she was put on ventilation. The patient eventually died at the hospital. The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission however found no major negligence during the treatment of the patient apart from the wrong channel.
