Kolkata Police lodges FIR against Metro Railway

Kolkata: Kolkata Police has initiated an FIR against Metro Railway after the family members of Sajal Kanjilal, who died in a tragic incident at Park Street Metro station, lodged a complaint in this connection at the Shakespeare Sarani police station. The concerned Metro personnel are expected to be grilled soon by the investigating officers of Shakespeare Sarani police station. According to sources, Kolkata Police has already got in touch with Metro authorities and asked for the CCTV camera footage of Park Street Metro station. Sleuths have also asked Metro Railway to provide the list of Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and Metro personnel who were on duty at Park Street Metro station at the time of the incident. Police also requested Metro authorities to provide details on how the technology works in a Metro rake.

Sources informed that the case has been initiated on charges of causing death by negligence (304A IPC) and acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention (34 IPC) against the Metro Railway personnel. The concerned Metro personnel are expected to be grilled soon by the investigating officers of Shakespeare Sarani police station. According to sources, Kolkata Police has already got in touch with Metro authorities and asked for the CCTV camera footage of Park Street Metro station. Sleuths have also asked Metro Railway to provide the list of Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and Metro personnel who were on duty at Park Street Metro station at the time of the incident. Police also requested Metro authorities to provide details on how the technology works in a Metro rake. To be specific, sleuths are probing to know how the door sensor usually works and how it functioned at the time of the mishap. "The autopsy report is awaited. The cause of death will be confirmed only after we get the report. Metro authorities have been asked to provide the details including technology of the Metro operations," said Meeraj Khalid, Deputy Commissioner, South Division of Kolkata Police. Kanjilal died on Saturday after his hand got stuck between the two parts of the door of a newly commissioned Metro rake which started moving with him hanging outside the coach. In the CCTV camera footage, it was clearly seen that no RPF personnel were there at the last point of the platform. Questions have also risen about the activity of the motorman and the conducting motorman.
