KOLKATA: A 16-year-old girl who had sneaked out on a joyride with his father’s newly bought scooter, without informing him on Sunday afternoon, died a ghastly death after she illegally tried to cross a railway track at Topsia through a small gap between two iron posts, while riding the scooter and was hit by a speeding train when she slipped on the tracks.
Khushboo Khatun, who had dropped out of school after class V, was flung off the scooter and was left bleeding from his head and spine as the train sped away. By the time local residents took her to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, she was declared dead.
“I had no clue that she was gone with the scooter while I was sleeping. She never rode a scooter by herself before. Had I knew what she was up to I would have never allowed her to ride by herself,” said Md Yusuf, Khushboo’s father.
Yusuf said, Khushboo was first taking rounds of the scooter near her home at Auddybagan in Entally but after a few locals saw her and threatened to call her parents as she was having a dodgy ride, she went to the adjacent neighbourhood crossing over the railway track at Ram Mohan Bera Lane.
The accident happened around 4pm when she was returning home by crossing the same tracks.“This part of the track was blocked with iron poles till a few months ago. But recently some locals had removed the iron structures to make it an illegal level crossing from where bikes and cycles can cross over to the other side.
The girl was trying the same when she lost control of the scooter and the vehicle fell on the track when the train hit her,” said a local resident.
A senior officials of Sealdah GRP said, they were yet to be informed about the incident by the train guard and driver till late into the night. “Whatever information we have gathered from the local police station and the hospital is that the young girl was a novice rider and had somehow lost control of the scooter while riding on a small stretch of land that runs parallel to the railway track and somehow climbed the tracks when the accident took place,” said the official.
Officers of Topsia police station said they are also investigating if someone else was there with her at the time of the accident. “We have heard that someone was accompanying the girl when she was riding. We are verifying the facts. We would also ask the local authorities to immediately fix the gap through which bikers had been crossing the railway tracks,” said the officer.
