Kolkata: Parents of morning section students of Hare School resorted to road blockade at College Street on Wednesday morning to press for recruitment of more teachers at the school. They alleged proper classes were not held in the school due to dearth of teachers and often students of two classes were made to sit in a single classroom. State Education minister Partha Chatterjee said on Wednesday that teachers would be hired at the school immediately on priority basis. "Hare School is known to be one of the best schools in the city. Children from far off places come here to study with the hope that would get the best education. But lack of teachers is affecting the standard of education here. Classes have become irregular and often students of two classes are made to sit in a single class. We have taken up the matter at different levels for the past two years but nothing happened. So, we took to the roads to press for our demands," said Rituparna Mallick, a parent, who took part in the road blockade. A parent alleged that the syllabus remained incomplete before the examinations. Situation turned worse in the past two months after a teacher retired, he said. The total number of students in the morning section from Class I to V is 493 while the total number of teachers is 9, which also includes the teacher-in-charge (TIC) . Teacher-in-charge of Hare School morning section Tanusree Nag said there was a scarcity of teachers in the school. "I try my best to ensure that classes are held regularly. However, when a teacher is absent it becomes difficult to manage. We have around 14 sanctioned posts and presently the strength is 9. We have brought the matter to the knowledge of the Education department many time. We believe things will improve." The parents withdrew their agitation after the TIC assured them that she would seriously take up the matter at the appropriate level. "We will wait for a month and if our demand is not met we will again stage a road block at the same place, a guardian said.
