Lightning claims 12 victims across Bengal

Kolkata: As many as 12 persons were killed after being struck by lightning across the state in the past 24 hours, with the highest number of victims from the district of Purulia. It has been learnt that two out of the seven victims in Purulia were women. Lightning struck several districts in South Bengal since Sunday afternoon along with rain. Two women who were working in a field at Barabazar area of Purulia were hit by lightning on Monday. The Met office has once again issued an alert to the fishermen in the coastal districts urging them not to venture into the sea in next two days.

Kolkata: As many as 12 persons were killed after being struck by lightning across the state in the past 24 hours, with the highest number of victims from the district of Purulia. It has been learnt that two out of the seven victims in Purulia were women. Meanwhile, two persons were killed in Jhargram and three were from South 24-Parganas. Lightning struck several districts in South Bengal since Sunday afternoon along with rain. Two women who were working in a field at Barabazar area of Purulia were hit by lightning on Monday. They were later declared brought dead in a nearby hospital. Among five others, two villagers from Parai area in Purulia and one each from Chakoltor and Purulia town were killed. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore has predicted heavy rainfall in the coastal districts and some other South Bengal districts in the next 48 hours, while there is a prediction of scattered rainfall in the city in the next 24 hours. According to a senior weather official, a low pressure trough formed over the North West Bay of Bengal has further accelerated monsoon activities in the state. The coastal districts like South 24-Parganas and East Midnapore will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours, as monsoon has become active due to the formation of two back-to-back low pressure troughs over Bay of Bengal. The districts like Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum, East Burdwan and West Burdwan, Jhargram and West Midnapore may also receive moderate to heavy rainfall in next two days, the weather official added. The Met office has once again issued an alert to the fishermen in the coastal districts urging them not to venture into the sea in next two days.
