Kolkata: Member of Parliament (MP) Rupa Gangulys son, identified as Akash Mukherjee, has been arrested after he drove a car dangerously and rammed it into the wall of Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC), within a few metres of his house at Golf Garden on Thursday. It has been alleged that he was driving in drunken state, but no such reflection was there in the medical report. He was produced at a city court and was remanded to police custody for one day. According to locals, on Thursday night at around 9 pm, Akash was returning home driving a sedan registered in Gangulys name. He allegedly drove the car at a high speed and rammed into the boundary wall of RCGC. A few locals alleged that at the time of accident there were several children on the road and pavement. Seeing the car moving towards them, they somehow scampered to safety. After the car stopped after ramming into the wall, Akash tried to get out but got stuck inside. Hearing the sound of collision, his father Dhruva Mukherjee came out of his home and rescued Akash. Within a few minutes of the accident Ganguly was informed and she tweeted stating that she had herself called up police and informed about the accident. She tweeted: "My son has met with an accident near my residence. I called police to take care of it with all legal implications. No favours or politics please. I love my son and will take care of him, but law should take its own course." Local residents alleged that Akash usually drives in a rash and negligent manner. Whenever some of the locals had complained to Dhruva regarding the same, he reportedly told them that if any accident happens, he would compensate for it. Akash was detained on Thursday night after he, along with the car, was taken to Jadavpur police station. Later, a case was initiated against him on charges of rash driving or riding on a public way, driving dangerously and mischief causing damage to public property. On Friday morning experts from State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) examined the car at Jadavpur police station and also visited the accident spot. A mechanical expert will examine the car to find out whether any mechanical problem was there or not.
