Govt s social security schemes find impetus with over 1 6 lakh registrations

Kolkata: Various social security schemes introduced by the state Labour department have received an impetus this year, with around 1,63,835 workers from various unorganised sectors registering themselves with the Samajik Suraksha Yojana, a flagship project by the Mamata Banerjee government. SSY has been implemented to cover the all the workers in the unorganised sectors who are in need of social security. According to the Labour department, Rs 52.36 crore had been disbursed against 51,089 claims, out of a total registration of 94,029 in the un-organised category. Her main objective was to extend the benefits of various social schemes to the labourers in different fields. One of the main purposes of such a platform was to make the workers aware about their social rights, the activities of the department and the social schemes.

Kolkata: Various social security schemes introduced by the state Labour department have received an impetus this year, with around 1,63,835 workers from various unorganised sectors registering themselves with the Samajik Suraksha Yojana, a flagship project by the Mamata Banerjee government. The state government has allotted a fund of Rs 87.58 crore for disbursement among the various beneficiaries who have been working in different sectors. According to a financial statement issued by the Labour department, the amount had been distributed among 86,988 beneficiaries working in three categories – un-organised, construction and transport workers, during the Shramik Mela early this year by the Labour department. The scheme comes under the Samajik Suraksha Yojana (SSY). SSY has been implemented to cover the all the workers in the unorganised sectors who are in need of social security. According to the Labour department, Rs 52.36 crore had been disbursed against 51,089 claims, out of a total registration of 94,029 in the un-organised category. Rs 31.51 crore had been distributed among 33,474 construction labourers, while the department received a total of 66,524 enrollments in the same category. The department also disbursed a fund of Rs 3.69 crore among 2,425 transport workers, while the total enrollments in this category remained at 3,282 in the current financial year. After coming to power, Banerjee had introduced a host of new schemes to ensure the financial security of unorganised and contractual labourers working in different spheres across the state. Her main objective was to extend the benefits of various social schemes to the labourers in different fields. The programme had received a tremendous response with a large number of people coming forward to get themselves registered under the ongoing schemes. During the programme, the department officials conducted an extensive campaign and disseminated important information among the workers from various fields. One of the main purposes of such a platform was to make the workers aware about their social rights, the activities of the department and the social schemes. Spot registration of workers under the SSY was also conducted during the Shramik Mela. It may be mentioned that the state government has started organising Shramik Mela at various locations in the state since 2014.
