Kolkata: The state Higher Education department is mulling the idea of holding West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations before the publication of results of Higher Secondary Examinations in the state. The move comes in the wake of a number of engineering seats in colleges lying vacant, with a number of students opting for colleges located outside the state. The department wants to make this effective right from the 2020 academic session. "The matter is still in the discussion stage. The final decision will be taken by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee," state Education minister Partha Chatterjee said, after holding a meeting with the universities and colleges that impart professional technical education. "We have proposed to advance the dates of the joint entrance examinations. We have found that within the time the higher secondary results are published, students sit for competitive examinations for admission in engineering stream in other states and venture out to study there. If we can hold joint entrance examinations earlier in our state, we will be able to have students seeking admission in colleges of our state which have good infrastructure," said Satyam Roychowdhury, secretary of Association of Professional Academic Institutions (APAI). APAI is the sole representative of all the self-financed engineering and technological institutions in Bengal and there are 114 private engineering colleges. "We will soon hold a meeting with officials of the Higher Education department and WBJEE Board to discuss the matter," he added. Chatterjee also reiterated that if any official is found to be involved in any sort of irregularities related to mid-day meals, the department will take strong action. The state Education department has already suspended two teachers of a school in Chinsurah, Hooghly on Monday, for not providing prescribed mid-day meal menu for the students.
