Four arrested with gold worth Rs 2 44 cr from Sudder Street

Kolkata: Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police arrested four persons with gold bars worth Rs 2.44 crore from Sudder Street on Tuesday afternoon. When their bags were searched, the police found huge amount of cash and gold bars. After counting the cash and gold bars, police found that the gold weighs more than 6 kg, which is worth Rs 2.44 crore and the cash was worth Rs 98 lakh. "We are interrogating the accused persons to know where the smuggled gold and cash were to be delivered. Significantly, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized approximately 10 kg gold worth Rs 3.87 crore and arrested three persons in Siliguri on Monday.

Kolkata: Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police arrested four persons with gold bars worth Rs 2.44 crore from Sudder Street on Tuesday afternoon. The gold was smuggled from Bangladesh. According to police, on Tuesday morning, STF officials came to know from their sources that some people have come to Kolkata from Bangladesh with a large number of gold bars. STF personnel came to know that four persons have been seen to Sudder Street. As soon as the information reached STF headquarters in Lalbazar, a police team went to Sudder Street along with the source and started keeping an eye in and around the area. After a while, the source pointed towards four persons walking along the Sudder Street with some bags. All of them were surrounded and asked to surrender. Having no other way, all four of them followed the instructions and they were detained and taken to the STF police station in Lalbazar. When their bags were searched, the police found huge amount of cash and gold bars. After counting the cash and gold bars, police found that the gold weighs more than 6 kg, which is worth Rs 2.44 crore and the cash was worth Rs 98 lakh. The accused persons were identified as Saikat Adhikary of Uluberia, Subrata Adhikary of Uluberia, Moloy Bhowmick and Partha Bhowmick of Nodakhali. During the interrogation, accused persons said that the gold bars have been smuggled into India from Bangladesh. "We are interrogating the accused persons to know where the smuggled gold and cash were to be delivered. Also, who else are connected with the racket," said Subhankar Sinha Sarkar, Joint Commissioner of Police, STF. Significantly, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized approximately 10 kg gold worth Rs 3.87 crore and arrested three persons in Siliguri on Monday. The arrested persons belong to Mizoram. During the investigation, DRI officials came to know that the gold bars were smuggled into India through Indo-Myanmar border in Mizoram. It is suspected that due to hike in duty on gold imports, smuggling of the yellow metal increased. In this case also, the smugglers had planned to deliver the gold in Kolkata.
