Mamata to inaugurate several projects in East Burdwan today

Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of a cluster of projects in East Burdwan on Monday. Apart from projects related to infrastructure development, a number of projects pertaining to irrigation will be unveiled by Banerjee as well. Three projects of piped water supply in Burdwan II, Jamalpur and Galsi I blocks and godowns with 1,000 metric tonne capacity in Raina I and Kalna II blocks will also be inaugurated by the Chief Minister. It may be mentioned that East Burdwan district was formed on April 7, 2017, after bifurcation of the erstwhile Burdwan district. The undivided Burdwan district was the largest producer of rice in West Bengal and the bulk of it was produced in what is now East Burdwan district.

A newly built stadium in Bhatar block, two mini indoor stadiums in Burdwan I block, construction of seven new roads and renovation of five roads in different blocks of the district, renovation of Mandela Park and Abasarika Park in the Burdwan Municipality area and infrastructure development of seeds farm in Memari I block will be inaugurated by her. The projects related to irrigation and water conservation that Banerjee will unveil are river irrigation water lifting projects – three in Jamalpur Block and one in Manteshwar Block, restoration of embankment of river in different blocks, restoration of Gangur canal and re-digging of two ponds in Ausgram I and II blocks. Three projects of piped water supply in Burdwan II, Jamalpur and Galsi I blocks and godowns with 1,000 metric tonne capacity in Raina I and Kalna II blocks will also be inaugurated by the Chief Minister. The foundation stone laying of the various development projects include renovation of 12 roads in different blocks of the district, 31 solar driven low capacity clustered tubewells in Kalna I, Katwa I and Purbasthali I blocks, conservation of embankment in Jamalpur block and south Kulgram check dam in Raina I block, to name a few. The programme at Sanskriti Lok Mancha will be graced by MLAs in the district including cabinet ministers Swapan Debnath and Siddiqullah Chowdhury. It may be mentioned that East Burdwan district was formed on April 7, 2017, after bifurcation of the erstwhile Burdwan district. It is an agriculturally prosperous district of Bengal. The soil and climate of the district favour the production of food grains. The undivided Burdwan district was the largest producer of rice in West Bengal and the bulk of it was produced in what is now East Burdwan district. Rice, the major crop, has three varieties – Aus (in autumn), Aman (in winter) and Boro (in summer). Other than cereals and pulses, cash crops such as mustard, til, jute and potatoes are also grown there.
