Mamata hopes Malayalees will overcome pain caused by flood

Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday wished Malayalees a happy Onam and hoped that they would overcome the pain of destruction caused by flood in Kerala this year. We are sure you will overcome the pain of the destruction caused by the devastating Kerala floods and prepare for a bountiful harvest next year," Banerjee tweeted. As Kerala struggles to recover, research has highlighted that floods triggered by heavy rain has left reservoirs and dams highly prone to earthquakes. Of these 21 are now highly prone to tremors, a phenomenon called Reservoir-Induced Seismicity (RIS), according to the latest Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis. Such huge water columns increase the stress on the earth crust, the infiltration of water from the reservoir reduces the effective stress.

Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday wished Malayalees a happy Onam and hoped that they would overcome the pain of destruction caused by flood in Kerala this year. She was also hopeful of a bountiful harvest in the state next year. "Wishing my Malayalee brothers and sisters a happy #Onam. We are sure you will overcome the pain of the destruction caused by the devastating Kerala floods and prepare for a bountiful harvest next year," Banerjee tweeted. The annual harvest festival of Onam falls in the month of Chingam of the Malayalam calendar. Onam, which is celebrated for 10 days, is popular for its secularity and inclusiveness. Kerala had witnessed severe flooding in August this year, following heavy rainfall. Over 100 people lost their lives and several hundreds were displaced due to the flood. As Kerala struggles to recover, research has highlighted that floods triggered by heavy rain has left reservoirs and dams highly prone to earthquakes. The state has 43 dams and reservoirs predominantly located in the highly deformed and fractured Western Ghats. Of these 21 are now highly prone to tremors, a phenomenon called Reservoir-Induced Seismicity (RIS), according to the latest Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis. RIS occurs in deep reservoirs that have water columns more than 100 metres depth. Such huge water columns increase the stress on the earth crust, the infiltration of water from the reservoir reduces the effective stress. With agency inputs
