Kolkata: Kolkata has the highest prevalence of oral health related issues in children among all other metro cities, reveals a nationwide survey conducted recently. The study highlights that a huge number of oral health issues have been found among children across the country. In a startling revelation, the survey said that 93 percent of the children examined in Kolkata were found to be suffering from one oral health problem or the other. Around 98 children from across the state were selected for the sample survey. Among them, 91 children have been found suffering from oral problems. The other metro cities have also reported high prevalence of oral issues among the children, with Mumbai registering 90 percent, Hyderabad 82 percent, Delhi 79 percent, Chennai 60 percent and Bangalore 46 percent. In the Eastern part of India, around 89 percent children are found to be affected with the oral ailments, while the figure in case of West India remains at 88 percent, with North India at 85 percent and South India at 64 percent. The survey conducted by KANTAR IMRB for Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited revealed that at least 8 out of 10 children in India suffer from oral health issues. Some of the major oral health problems found in children surveyed include visible plaque accumulation, white spots on teeth, gum inflammation, bad breath and gum bleeding. The survey also stated that as many as 2 out of 3 children have cavities or are at a high risk of developing them. The study also showed that most of the children in India do not follow essential oral care practices such as brushing twice daily and regular dental check-ups. More than 70 percent of the children surveyed do not brush their teeth twice a day and more than 60 percent of them have not been taken to a dentist in the past one year.
