Kolkata: Tension ran high at the NRS Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday morning, after some staff members of the hospital spotted a taxi carrying some rotten chickens out of the hospital. The incident prompted the hospital authorities to order a probe into the incident. A senior official of the hospital said that the probe has been initiated to find out if there were any rotten chicken in the hospital canteen. Samples of both uncooked and cooked meats from the canteen were sent to the laboratory for tests. The authorities will also conduct a detailed probe to ascertain from where the chickens were brought to the hospital. There would be major cause for concern for the hospital authorities if the chickens are found to have been served to the patients. As the matter came to light at around 10 am in the morning, the patients and their family members started an agitation inside the hospital complex, alleging that rotten chicken had been served to the patients. They alleged that the rotten chickens were piled up inside the hospital canteen and later they were kept in the taxi in order to transport them to some other place. The probe will also ascertain where the taxi driver had intended to take the rotten chickens. A senior official of the hospital said that they would not compromise with the quality of the food that is served to the patients and hence a high-level committee has been formed in this regard. "The chickens in question have already been sent for test in the laboratory," the official added. Some of the staff members spotted the car and stopped it out of suspicion. They later found the rotten chickens kept at the back of the taxi wrapped in a sack. The matter soon sparked panic among some of the patients and senior hospital officials rushed to the spot. The taxi driver was taken to the hospital supers room and the canteen staff members were also called for interrogation. The taxi driver reportedly claimed that the chickens were not rotten and some discar- ded items were inside the sack, which he was taking away for his personal use. After being informed, police reached the spot and pacified the agitating crowd. The situation was subsequently brought under control.
