Kolkata: The Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) has given a fresh lease of life to an 18-year-old youth from Murshidabad, who had been suffering from brain hemorrhage. The doctors at the hospital conducted a critical surgery to extract the blood from his brain. It was difficult for the doctors to conduct the surgery as the patient had already turned unconscious due to bleeding. The youth, a patient of cancer, also required chemotherapy. It was a challenge for the doctors as they could not perform chemotherapy unless he gained consciousness. The platelet count of the patient had gone down to 5,000, as a result of which there was a threat to his life. A senior official of CMCH said that the patient had been transferred to the city from Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital (MMCH). The doctors in MMCH had suspected that the patient might have been affected with blood cancer and hence felt the need to transfer him urgently. A senior doctor from the oncology department of CMCH said that the patient fell unconscious when he was admitted to the emergency department. Before he lost his senses, the victim told the doctors that he had severe pain in his head. The patient was quickly shifted to the medicine ward. The doctors at the hospital subsequently performed CT scan, blood tests and many other tests on him. Various diagnostic reports confirmed that the patient had been affected with acute leukemia and his platelet count had gone down as low as 5,000. The doctors felt the need for chemotherapy but they were unable to perform it as the patient was in coma. The anesthetists were not willing to perform anesthesia on such a patient who was already unconscious. The neurosurgeons took a risk and suggested that they would perform the surgery with a constant supply of oxygen to his brain. During the surgery, the doctors removed the blood from his brain and also started administering steroids as a treatment for leukemia. The patient gained consciousness following the surgery. The doctors said that he had been suffering from lymphoblastic leukemia. The patient was initially kept at the critical care unit and shifted to the general ward after his condition improved. The doctors said that the youth will be under treatment for the next two years for leukemia.
