Rain likely to play spoilsport on Viswakarma Puja in North Bengal

Kolkata: Rain may play a spoilsport on Viswakarma Puja in North Bengal while South Bengal districts are expected to receive scattered rainfall, said the Regional Meteorological Centre on Tuesday. The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours which may further complicate the situation. Connectivity between North Bengal and South Bengal districts has been disrupted. Businessmen in North Bengal also expressed their concern as there is a prediction of heavy rainfall on Viswakarma puja. The MeT office said a low pressure trough was formed over Bay of Bengal, which would bring more rainfall in North Bengal.

Incessant rain in the past few days have disrupted normal life in North Bengal and many places in Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling districts were flooded. Traffic movement was affected as National Highway 31 remained inundated after a local river got flooded. The district of Cooch Behar received considerable rainfall in the past few days. Floods have inundated tea gardens in Darjeeling and tourists are stranded at many places. The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours which may further complicate the situation. Connectivity between North Bengal and South Bengal districts has been disrupted. Floodwaters have inundated portions of National Highway 31 at Malbazar. The worst-affected districts are Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar. Various parts of Siliguri went under water giving a harrowing experience to the people in the area. Businessmen in North Bengal also expressed their concern as there is a prediction of heavy rainfall on Viswakarma puja. The situation may improve after Thursday. The MeT office said there could be some scattered rainfall accompanied with lightning in some parts of South Bengal in the evening in the next two days. There is no prediction of heavy rainfall in South Bengal. The coastal districts may witness marginally higher rainfall compared to the other South Bengal districts. The MeT office said a low pressure trough was formed over Bay of Bengal, which would bring more rainfall in North Bengal. Various South Bengal districts, including the city, received light to moderate rainfall in the past few days. The weather office said the temperature in the city may remain normal but the humidity-level will be on higher side. Despite getting frequent rainfall, the people in the city have been experiencing discomfort because of the humidity-level in the air. The situation may be prevalent for the next couple of days.
