Kolkata: Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) is hopeful that the reduced length of the upcoming intake jetty at Nazirgunge in Howrah will not be an impediment to the safe turning of ships. The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) that has earlier decided on 55 m length of the intake jetty will soon submit a detailed proposal with the reduced length being 35m to KoPT. "A joint inspection has recently been made by our technical team along with KMDA after which it was agreed that KMDA will submit a report with reduced length of the intake jetty. At present, an intake jetty of HMC located in the Botanical Garden supply water to the Puddapukur water treatment plant from where the treated water was supplied to the residents. Following this, the alternative site at Nazirgunge was chosen and work for the water intake jetty had started in the middle of 2018.

Our technical committee will examine the same and will find out a solution," said KoPT chairman Vinit Kumar on the sidelines of a special session on New Growth Dimension of KoPT- Challenges and Opportunities organised by Merchants Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The port authorities, a few months back had served stop work notice after finding out that the project will encroach to the shipping channel. The jetty has been conceived to supply river water through pipeline to the Puddapukur water treatment plant and then after treatment supply it to the residents in and around Botanical Garden in Shibpur. The project undertaken by Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) is being executed by KMDA. "Shifting the project to another place will delay it further for at least two to three years. It is a project which will ensure so we want the project to be completed fast," a senior KMDA official said. At present, an intake jetty of HMC located in the Botanical Garden supply water to the Puddapukur water treatment plant from where the treated water was supplied to the residents. The need for another similar jetty was felt with the increase in population but the Botanical Garden authorities refused to grant permission for it. Following this, the alternative site at Nazirgunge was chosen and work for the water intake jetty had started in the middle of 2018.
