Kolkata: A biker died at Santragachhi railway station on Friday afternoon after he, along with his bike, got stuck under a locomotive. According to sources, the Howrah-Hyderabad East Coast Express left Howrah Station at around 12 pm. Around 12:06 pm it was crossing Santragachi railway station. All of a sudden, the locomotive pilot felt a jerk as if some object had got stuck in its wheels. But before he could stop the train, an explosion happened. After running a few metres, the train finally came to a halt. After the locomotive pilot came down, he saw a bike stuck under the locomotive which was still burning. He immediately informed Santragachi station master over his wireless set. Soon the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and other Railway officials rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Following this, the bike, along with a mans charred body was recovered. Later it was learnt that the person was trying to cross the railway track using the road meant for use by the Railway personnel. The locomotive pilot did not see him as the bike came in front of the train at the last moment. As soon as the bike was hit by the locomotive, it got stuck under the engine. Due to friction, sparks were produced and it came in touch with petrol and the bike caught fire. However, no problem was found in the locomotive after proper inspection and thus the train left for its destination after almost half-an-hour. According to South Eastern Railway officials, there is a horizontal road for Railway employees to crossover to the other side of the Santragachi railway yard. Despite it being closed for commoners, many locals allegedly use it as a thoroughfare when no vigilance is there. On Friday, the deceased was doing the same when he failed to notice that a train was coming. The body, along with the bike, has been handed over to the Government Railway Police for further course of action.
