60L girls have benefitted from Kanyashree Mamata

Kolkata: On the International Day of the Girl Child, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said 60 lakh girls have benefitted from the Kanyashree scheme taken up by the state government for the empowerment of adolescent girls. Our Govt in #Bangla started the #Kanyashree scheme in 2013, which won the @UN (first prize) award in 2017. #Kanyashree empowers girls from school to university level so that they Till date, #Kanyashree has empowered over 60 lakh girl students. Initially, Kanyashree was restricted to school students but now even college and university students have also been included. Initiatives have been taken to set up a Kanyashree University in Nadia district and Kanyashree colleges across the state.

To mark the occasion she tweeted: "Today is International Day of the Girl Child. Our Govt in #Bangla started the #Kanyashree scheme in 2013, which won the @UN (first prize) award in 2017. #Kanyashree empowers girls from school to university level so that they Till date, #Kanyashree has empowered over 60 lakh girl students. Total budget since launch is over Rs 7,000 crore (till Jan 2019). Moreover, the #Bangla Govt has taken the initiative to set up a #Kanyashree University in Nadia and #Kanyashree colleges in districts an become independent women." After coming to power in 2011, Banerjee chalked out a scheme to empower the girl students and introduced Kanyashree in 2012. The scheme has immensely helped girls coming from economically challenged backgrounds. Initially, Kanyashree was restricted to school students but now even college and university students have also been included. The students studying Arts and Science streams get monthly stipends and this has helped them to carry on with their higher studies. Initiatives have been taken to set up a Kanyashree University in Nadia district and Kanyashree colleges across the state. Banerjee had laid the foundation stone of the new university at Krishnagar in Nadia district in January. The Kanyashree university would be only for women. It may be mentioned that Kanyashree had received the United Nation award for Public Service on June 23, 2017. The Chief Minister had gone to attend the award-giving ceremony which was held at the World Forum, The Hague and received the prize. Four million girls have already been enrolled in the scheme which is now being implemented through 16,000 institutes and schools. It may be mentioned that Kanyashree and Sabuj Sathi schemes have helped to reduce the number of school dropouts and early marriages among girls, particularly in the backward areas. Under the Sabuj Sathi scheme, the students of state-run and aided schools studying in classes IX to XII are given free bicycles. This scheme has also bagged an international award and under the scheme around 80 lakh students have been given bicycles. In all the public distribution programmes where the beneficiaries under various schemes get financial assistance, the Chief Minister has said over and again on the empowerment of women. She has inspired the girls studying in colleges and universities to prepare for administrative examinations and accordingly centres have come up where coaching is given for state and Union civil services examinations.
