Kolkata: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested six persons, including three women, and seized gold bars worth Rs 4.20 crore on Monday and Tuesday from Siliguri in North Bengal and Ranaghat in Nadia. According to DRI officials, on Monday morning, officials intercepted two luxury buses bearing registration numbers of Assam in Siliguri. The buses were coming from Shillong and Guwahati. DRI officials identified two suspects from the bus coming from Shillong and forced them to get down with their luggage. From the bus coming from Guwahati, two more persons, including a woman, were detained with their luggage. The DRI found Myanmar currency amounting to 1,00, 150 Burmese Kyat inside the luggage of the detained persons. During interrogation, accused persons admitted that they were carrying gold bars. According to a statement issued by the DRI, officials found 38 gold biscuits weighing about one kg and one gold bar weighing about 7.3 kg, worth Rs 2.89 crore approximately. Four accused persons were arrested in this connection. The arrested persons further claimed that a Myanmarese national in Aizal, had handed over the gold them and told them to give to someone in Kolkata. On Monday, they were produced before a local court remanded to judicial custody. On Monday night, DRI officials came to know that a few more persons are coming to Kolkata to smuggle gold. On Tuesday morning, a team from DRI was waiting for a bus bearing registration number of West Bengal in Ranaghat. As soon as the bus was spotted, DRI officials blocked its the way. Two women were identified as suspects and they were detained by DRI officials. During frisking, 20 gold biscuits weighing about 3.3 kg were found concealed in their luggage. Gold biscuits seized from the two women were worth Rs 1.31 crore. During the interrogation, the duo also stated that a Myanmarese national gave them the gold biscuits to deliver them in Kolkata. In the current financial year so far, DRI has seized 90 kgs of gold in Eastern Region. In a separate incident, Customs department seized gold weighing about 6.6 kg and arrested three persons from Phoolbagan on Tuesday. Customs officials came to know from their sources that gold smugglers would hand over a consignment in Phoolbagan. The officials kept a strict vigil in a specific area. After a while they spotted a car in which three persons were talking to each other. The car was immediately surrounded and it was found that two persons from Mizoram were about to hand over gold biscuits to someone. Later, the trio were arrested. The gold was being smuggled in India from China through Myanmar border.
