Kolkata: Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh urged people not to dispose garbage on vacant plots, which are serving as mosquito-breeding grounds. Talking to mediapersons on Thursday, Ghosh said despite conducting awareness drives against dengue there are people who are offloading garbage on vacant plots. "The garbage is not cleaned from the private vacant plots and after shower the accumulated water and garbage serve as the breeding-ground for mosquitoes. When cases of dengue are detected in the area, people shout and blame the Kolkata Municipal Corporation but never raise any voice against those who have thrown garbage on the vacant plots," he said. "We have contacted some of the plot owners who told us that people scale the boundary wall and throw garbage on the plot," he further maintained. Recollecting his own experience, Ghosh said: "I had visited the PWD quarters with Mayor and we saw people throwing garbage from the third floor. Senior PWD engineers live in the quarters and some of them lack civic sense." Ghosh said for the success of sengue drives close cooperation between the civic officials and workers and local people is required. "The staff strength of the KMCs solid waste management is limited and attempts are made to keep Kolkata clean and it is the responsibility of the people to keep private properties clean and free from garbage." Senior KMC officials led by Debashis Biswas, chief vector control officer visited ward No. 2 in North Kolkata where some dengue cases have been detected. The accumulated garbage has been removed and there is nothing to worry about, said Biswas. Ghosh said the number of dengue cases in 2019 was far less than 2018.
