Kolkata: The Burdwan Medical College and Hospital has given a fresh lease of life to a 25-year-old woman by removing a tumour weighing one kg from her throat. The patient, a resident of Habibpur in Malda, developed the tumour seven years ago and it gradually got bigger in size. After she developed complications her family members took her to a hospital in Malda, but the doctors could not take the risk of conducting a surgery. Some local residents told her parents to take her to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. After all the necessary clinical tests at the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, the hospital formed a team of doctors to perform the surgery. After various examinations, the doctors found that it was a highly vascular tumour and it remained encompassing a number of blood vessels inside her body. The doctors found that it would be difficult to remove as it could damage the vessels in the process. Blood was transfused in her body prior the surgery. The team of doctors performed the surgery on Wednesday and removed the tumour. The operation lasted for nearly three hours. The doctors were extra cautious while conducting the surgery as any mistake could have put the life of victim under risk. The doctors said the hemoglobin-level in her body remained at 6 g/dl before she was operated on. During the surgery around 3 litres of blood was drained from her body. However, the hospital doctors successfully carried out the surgery and saved her life despite various challenges. "The hemoglobin-level in her blood was gradually going down due to the tumour. It was a risky operation. We all were very cautious while conducting the operation. The tumour has been removed and the patient is gradually improving," a senior hospital official said.
