Kolkata: Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday laid the blame for untoward incidents at Jadavpur University on outsiders and stressed on the need for steps to be adopted for preventing their entry into the campus. He also reiterated that prevalence of peace on the university campus should be given the foremost priority. "I came here for the interest of students. Peace on the campus should not be negotiated by any means. Students have complained against entry of outsiders and they are deeply concerned about this issue. I empathise with the students, alumni and faculty on this issue and have urged the university authorities to take steps to ensure that peace on the campus is not jeopardised by any means," said the Governor, who also happens to be the Chancellor of the university. His statement came after he attended the Court meeting at Aurobindo Bhavan, the main administrative building of the varsity. This is the first time in the history of the university when the Governor came to attend Court meeting inside the campus. Dhankhar pointed out that the Calcutta High Court had laid down guidelines in 2014 regarding the entry of outsiders and police picketing inside a university campus and said that the same must be implemented. He also raised the issue of student elections in universities, stating: "There should be student elections in all universities. Polls have not been held for two and half years in a number of universities. I am happy that the government has initiated the process of elections in four universities. The Supreme Court has guidelines regarding student polls as well." He also called for setting up a Gender Sensitisation Cell in the university campus, with the student delegation flagging off the issue after meeting the Chancellor following the Court meeting. Dhankhar termed his visit at the campus as a memorable one and said that keeping the interest of the institution in view, he was happy with the cooperation of everyone. "There have been attempts to portray Jadavpur University in a bad light. We would all work unitedly so that faith in the varsity is restored. Teachers, students, alumni, former Vice-Chancellors and everyone else associated with the institution would have to work together and extensively to chalk out the plans so that the varsity gets institution of eminence tag," he maintained.
