Kolkata: In a major breakthrough, the Barrackpore police on Saturday arrested Prince Singh, the mastermind behind the murder of Debanjan Das who was found dead in North 24-Parganas Nimta on Nabami night. Main accused Prince was absconding since then. According to sources, the Barrackpore police came to know about his whereabouts after interrogating his aunt and his niece. The officers from Barrackpore raided the house of his relative in South 24-Parganas Budge Budge area on Saturday evening and arrested him from there. According to the police, it was Prince who had hatched the murder conspiracy. Incidentally, earlier in the day, the police arrested Princes aide Bishal Maru, a co-accused in connection with the murder. Maru was also a part of the conspiracy, the police suspects. The investigating officers came to know that Maru had spoken to Prince several times over phone after the crime was committed. The police on Saturday also confirmed that the assailants came on a motorcycle and fired few rounds of bullets at Das out of which two pierced his body. They fired when the car was on the move. The investigating officers also learnt that on the day of the incident, the victim along with some of his friends had visited a pub at Salt Lake Sector V area. Das girlfriend with whom Prince earlier had a relationship was also present at the party. In the preliminary investigation, the cops came to know that Prince had asked his friend Maru to visit the pub to keep a tab on Das. After the party got over, Das left the pub at around 1.24 am and started driving his car in order to reach home in Nimta. Police have already collected the CCTV footages of the pub and interrogated some of the victims associates who also attended the party. After examining Marus call list, it became clear that he was a part of the conspiracy and had constantly been in touch with the main accused. The preliminary investigations suggest that a triangular love relationship might have led to the incident. The victims family members have already told the police that Prince had threatened Das on several occasions asking him to stay away from the girl with whom the accused had shared a relationship previously. Meanwhile, a forensic team on Saturday visited the spot where the incident happened. The team members collected several samples from the car and also examined the places where the vehicle crashed. It is apprehended that the victim had been driving his car when he was shot. After he received bullet injuries, the car hit a roadside boundary wall and finally stopped few metres away from the place where Das was shot. The forensic experts also said that there were several scratch marks on the vehicle. "We are trying to corroborate the material evidence found inside the car with the nature of damages that have happened. It was evident that the speeding vehicle crashed against the roadside barriers and walls before finally stopping at a distance," a member of the forensic team said.
