  • | Tuesday | 22nd October, 2019

Kolkata: The Assessment department of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will take strong action against some big housing complexes in the city that have been negligent in coughing up their property tax. The civic body has already identified some multi-storey apartments that have been reluctant in paying up assessment tax, even after notices being slapped on them for doing the needful. "We have achieved our September target for collection of property assessment tax. But with a large number of big housing complexes coming up, we feel that the mechanism of assessment collection should be strengthened further. We will take strong action as per law against them," said Atin Ghosh, who is in charge of the Assessment department of the KMC.

We have identified some big housing complexes in the city, where owners have not turned up to pay tax even after notices being slapped. We will take strong action as per law against them," said Atin Ghosh, who is in charge of the Assessment department of the KMC. Ghosh held a meeting with the chief manager and manager of the Assessment department on Tuesday, with the aim of bringing unassessed properties, if any, under its ambit and clear disputes so that collections can be mopped up in a more effective manner. Ghosh also fixed the target of revenue collection for the month of November. It may be mentioned that Mayor Firhad Hakim, in a meeting with the Assessment department on Saturday, had instructed the concerned officials to increase revenue generation. "We are armed with a rough list of unassessed buildings in the city and are bringing these buildings under the ambit of tax. Notices will be served making the person concerned liable, which means the person/persons living in the building will be liable," a senior official of the department said. Ghosh will hold another meeting next week with the officials of his department and take stock of the ward-wise list of property assessment and disputes. They will then give necessary instructions to resolve them at the earliest.
