Kolkata: University Grants Commission (UGC) has started a programme through which newly recruited teachers will be trained. "Guru Dakshata is the name of the training programme. It will be a residential programme where all the newly recruited teachers will undergo systematic training. The curriculum for this one month programme has already been prepared and shared with the experts. At present, the duration of the programme is one month. It will be implemented from the upcoming academic year," said Dr Bhushan Patwardhan, vice-chairman of University Grants Commission, on the sidelines of the seminar on Implementing the challenges of the new Education Policy held at the 2nd Globalised Education Forum 2019, organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce on Friday. He reiterated that training of the teachers who will train these teachers has already started. Training of the first batch of teachers was conducted in Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune. Dr Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, chairman of committee for Draft National Education Policy 2019 and former chairman of ISRO, Professor Saikat Maitra, vice-chancellor of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology and Roshni Sen, IAS, Principal Secretary of state Technical Education, Training and Skill Development department, also expressed their opinion on the Draft National Education Policy 2019. "Gross Expenditure Ratio on education needs to jump to 20 percent of all government expenditure from the current 10-11 percent for implementing the new National Education Policy, 2019. The Draft National Education Policy 2019 strongly recommends autonomy in Higher Education – academically, administratively and financially," said Kasturirangan. He opined that that this jump in expenditure in education is in tune if India were to achieve an economy of $5 trillion. The committee for Draft National Education Policy seeks to increase the focus on early childhood care, reform the current exam system, strengthen teacher training and restructure the education regulatory framework.
