Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has intensified its vigil over the drives that are being carried out to prevent spreading of dengue in the city. The vigil has been intensified following heavy shower which the city received last week as a result of the cyclonic storm Bulbul, which affected vast areas of South and North 24-Parganas on late Saturday evening. It may be recalled that KMC has started anti-dengue drives from January and they have been divided into several phases. It may be mentioned that not a single dengue death has been reported so far in the areas under the civic body. KMC has identified 20 wards as vulnerable to dengue and drives have been carried out with intense supervision at these areas. Senior officials of KMCs Heath department are accompanying the teams comprising employees from Solid Waste Management department and the Building department. The KMC teams are visiting individual houses, apartments and commercial buildings, to see whether the underground reservoirs and overhead tanks are properly covered and whether there is any accumulated garbage in the buildings. The garbage from unused vacant lands is also being removed. The KMC doctors have requested people who are suffering from fever to get their blood tested. The civic body has blood collection centres in every ward along with 16 dedicated dengue laboratories. The result of blood test is informed to the concerned person through SMS and hard copies can be collected from the KMC office. The doctors said Aedes Egypti mosquitoes cannot breed in an environment where the minimum temperature is below 20 degree Celsius. They added that despite repeated campaigns, many people do not follow the dos and donts stated by the civic authorities. They do not keep their homes clean and do not clean the containers used to store water at least once a week.
