Kolkata: A man was duped of about Rs 1.5 lakh by a person, who offered him help, during withdrawing cash from an ATM counter in Lake Town. According to sources, on Saturday, a man, identified as Bhikhari Yadav, of Dum Dum Park was trying to withdraw money from an ATM of Canara Bank in Lake Town on November 10. However, even after three consecutive attempts the transactions failed. At that moment an unknown person standing outside of the ATM counter offered Yadav some help. He took the ATM card and went inside the counter along with Yadav. After the card was put on the slot, Yadav again entered the PIN number but the transaction failed again. After that accused person returned Yadavs card and left the spot. A few minutes later when Yadav reached home, he received four SMS from the bank mentioning that Rs 40,000 has been withdrawn using his card from an ATM. A few minutes later he got some more SMSs mentioning that his debit card had been used for shopping worth Rs 69,000 approximately. He immediately called up the customer care and narrated the incident. The bank representative on the phone instructed him to send an SMS after which his account was locked. On November 11, he went to the bank branch and told the manager about the incident. Hearing his allegations, the manager asked Yadav to submit the ATM cum debit card and take statement of his account to lodge a police complaint. When Yadav handed him over the ATM card, the manager reportedly found that the card was a different one. It was a different ATM card which was registered on some other persons name. He went to Lake Town police station and lodged a comnplaint. It is suspected that while returning Yadavs card, the miscreant swapped it with another card. Since it was also an ATM card of Canara Bank, Yadav did not suspect anything. However, the police have sent a letter to the bank requesting information related to the transactions made after the card was taken from Yadav. Police are also checking the CCTV camera footages of the ATM counter from where the miscreant had withdrawn cash.
