Kolkata: The Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) has been accused of a glaring medical negligence in which a teenager from Birbhum, who was a cancer patient, was forced to spend a night out in the open inside the hospital compound without being admitted. The patient was taken to the hospital on Wednesday but he was denied admission despite repeated pleas from the family members of the victim. The patient was finally admitted to the hospital following the intervention of the hospital superintendent on Thursday afternoon. Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on repeated occasions asked the authorities of various state-run hospitals to treat the patients with a human face and also to ensure that nobody is denied treatment at hospitals. It was learnt that the patient, Sukhdeb Mal, a teenager from Birbhum has been suffering from cancer. His family members took him to Bangalore for treatment. But the parents had to bring back the patient to the state after they exhausted funds. The family members then decided to take the patient to a government hospital. Sukhdeb was taken to CMCH on Wednesday. The emergency department of the hospital denied admission to the patient advising the family members to take the patient to oncology department. When the patient was taken to the oncology department on a trolley, the doctors told the family members that this was not the right procedure to admit a patient. The family members had no option other than spending the night with the patient on the trolley in the open air inside the hospital complex. The victims parents ran from one department to other to ensure a bed for the boy but no one from the hospital responded to the call of his father. Some of vernacular television channels telecast the news following which the hospital superintendent Dr Indranil Biswas came as a rescuer. Following his intervention, the boy was finally given admission on Thursday afternoon. The family members of the victim claimed that the doctors at the hospital told them that the patient could not be admitted to the hospital as he was previously treated in a Bangalore hospital. It was not possible for them to treat a patient who earlier treated in another hospital. The doctors also suggested them to take the patient to Bangalore hospital for treatment, claimed the boys family members.
