Kolkata: Many city-based doctors on Friday expressed their concern over the growing incidents of juvenile diabetes and congenital hypothyroidism (CH) in infants during the inauguration of 6th Biennial Conference in Kolkata by Indian Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology (ISPAE) on Friday. The conference will be held here in the city till December 1, where renowned doctors from across the country and abroad are participating. This is the first time that such a robust conference of ISPAE is taking place in the city. Speaking on the occasion Dr Subrata Dey, head of the department of Pediatric Endicrinology in a private hospital in the city, said that the congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is found in 1 out of 2000 live births. The disease must be detected in the infants within two weeks after they are born. If detection is done late, the newborn may suffer mental retardation. "The diagnosis should be done early and treatment must be started for optimum growth. Growth hormone deficiency and hypothyroidism are treatable. Type 1 diabetes mellitus is on the rise and requires insulin therapy. Some new advancement in diagnosis management and technology have given a chance for these children to lead a normal lives," Dr Dey said. CH is caused due to the inadequate thyroid hormone production in newborn infants. It can occur due to an anatomic defect in the gland or due to an inborn error of thyroid metabolism, or iodine deficiency. CH is the most common neonatal endocrine disorder. The doctors also said obesity which has been on the rise among the children is a major cause of concern. Through balanced diet, indulging in exercise and life style changes, one can check diabetes. The ISPAE conferences includes the discussion on the recent advances in this field, interactive sessions and management oriented lectures to provide the delegates with the ideal platform for information exchange.
