Kolkata: Trinamool Congress is set to move a no-confidence motion against the BJP-controlled Bhatpara municipality on December 6, said Jyotipriya Mallick, party president, North 24-Parganas, on Friday. Mallick alleged that BJP had unleashed a reign of terror and forced these councillors to join the saffron party. He said Bhatpara municipality went under the control of BJP in June after the Lok Sabha election and for six months, Trinamool could not move the no-confidence motion. The 34-member municipality went under the party's control after the saffron camp's stupendous performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Trinamool Congress regaining Bhatpara municipality will deal a major blow to BJP MP from Barrackpore Arjun Singh.

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress is set to move a no-confidence motion against the BJP-controlled Bhatpara municipality on December 6, said Jyotipriya Mallick, party president, North 24-Parganas, on Friday. The 12 councillors who have rejoined Trinamool held a meeting with Mallick. Senior party leaders including Tapas Roy, Nirmal Ghosh, Chandrima Bhattacharya and Paras Dutta also attended the meeting, which was held in the chamber of Mallick housed in the Assembly. Mallick alleged that BJP had unleashed a reign of terror and forced these councillors to join the saffron party. But they later felt claustrophobic and expressed their willingness to come back to their old fold. He said Bhatpara municipality went under the control of BJP in June after the Lok Sabha election and for six months, Trinamool could not move the no-confidence motion. The six month term, however, will end on December 4 and Trinamool will subsequently move the motion on December 6. It may be mentioned that BJP has lost control over all the seven municipal bodies which came under its control after the results of the Lok Sabha poll. The 34-member municipality went under the partys control after the saffron camps stupendous performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Later on, few others had joined their ranks, taking BJPs strength in the civic body to 26 in June. Of the 26 turncoats who had joined BJP, 12 have since returned to TMC at Trinamool Bhawan here in the presence of senior party leaders Firhad Hakim and Jyotipriya Mallick. It may be mentioned that Trinamool Congress has already reestablished its control over the Naihati, Garulia, Kanchrapara, Halisahar, Bongaon and Haringhata civic bodies. Mallick said that in the past six months, no development has been carried out in the areas after the civic bodies went under BJP. The people are fed up with the party and its divisive politics, he added. He said after BJPs landslide defeat in the three Assembly by-elections, leaders and workers from Trinamool will think twice before joining the saffron camp. Mallick added that the people in the state have kept faith on Mamata Banerjee, as they believe she would carry out total development in these areas. Trinamool Congress regaining Bhatpara municipality will deal a major blow to BJP MP from Barrackpore Arjun Singh. It shows that he is fast becoming unpopular in the area and thus his importance in BJP is expected to become marginalised soon.
