Kolkata: The Bankshall Court has ordered 10 years rigorous imprisonment to five youths, who had been arrested on charges of dacoity. The youths, identified as Goutam Barui, Amit Dutta, Santu Das, Abhijit Baidya and Debashis Sil, are all residents of Duttapukur in North 24-Parganas. Apart from the five youths, Birendra Chowdhury, who used to work as a peon of a private firm, has been ordered seven years of imprisonment. The incident in which they were involved took place in February, 2014. Sanjay Agarwal, a businessman, had lodged a complaint with the Burrabazar police station that five youths had entered his office on Clive Row in the evening of February 12 and decamped with over Rs 50 lakh in cash. The youths had silenced two workers of the firm at gunpoint and fled with the money. Four youths had fled but the security guards succeeded in overpowering the fifth one, who was later identified as Goutam Barui and handed him over to the police. During interrogation, Barui told the police that he along with four others had hatched the plan. Amit Dutta was posted at the gate of the office, while the others entered and took away the money at gunpoint. The kingpin of the operation was Debashis Sil. Police had subsequently arrested the four other members of the gang within 24 hours. Meanwhile, Agarwal lodged a fresh complaint with the police that around Rs 1.50 crore had been looted from his office. Police eventually recovered a revolver, two daggers and cash worth Rs 38 lakh from the youths. During interrogation, Goutam confessed that before he was arrested, he had kept a bag containing the cash inside a plywood box and left it behind the building. Police took him to the site but failed to trace the box. They later scanned the CCTV footage and found a person climbing the stairs hurriedly with the bag. He was identified as Birendra Chowdhury, who used to work as a peon in a private firm. He had kept the bag containing Rs 21.50 lakh in his office locker. The police later recovered another Rs 20 lakh from his Howrah residence.
