Darjeeling: With the inauguration of a green booth and the flagging off of a green vehicle, residents of Darjeeling on Thursday took pledge to work towards Clean Darjeeling Green Darjeeling. The programme initiated by the district administration along with other stakeholders including the Darjeeling Municipality, police, Forest and Health department, aims at sensitising the masses as well as initiating necessary action on ground zero. "This activity had commenced a long time ago but we did not get the desired results," stated Deepap Priya P, District Magistrate, Darjeeling. A green booth was inaugurated at the Darjeeling Motor Stand on Thursday. It will continue for 15 days while the area will be cleaned and sanitised. Volunteers will be present in the booth and will hear feedback apart from sensitising the masses. It will be shifted to different locations later. A door-to-door visit was also initiated, targeting shops in particular. Waste bins were also distributed and shopkeepers were informed how to segregate waste. Taxis will also be provided with waste bags so that passengers do not litter the roads. A green vehicle was also flagged off, which will be visiting different parts of Darjeeling spreading awareness. A Clean Darjeeling Green Darjeeling jingle in Nepali was also released on Thursday. "After the awareness drive if shops or individuals are found littering, they will be fined heavily. Licences will not be renewed for businesses that do not have proper waste management systems. We will hold meetings with hoteliers so that they too have proper waste management systems. They will also in turn sensitise the tourists and customers regarding waste disposal and littering" added the District Magistrate.
