Kolkata: State Irrigation and Waterways minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday said that the state government would provide water to the farmers through canals in different districts during the Rabi season. During his speech in the Assembly, Adhikari said that in the next Rabi and Boro seasons, water would be supplied to around 6,53,234 acres of cultivable land in various districts through irrigation canals to ensure that the farmers do not face any difficulties while producing crops. "Farmers in various districts were concerned about the supply of irrigation water. We have decided to supply water to West Burdwan, East Burdwan, Hooghly and Howrah 7-8 times during the period between December this year and March next year. Meanwhile, the farmers from Bankura, Jhargram and West Midnapore would get water from the Kangshabati irrigation project 3-4 times during the same period," Adhikari said. He further stated: "Farmers in Birbhum and Murshidabad would get irrigation water from February to April next year. The department would also supply water for cultivation in Jalpaiguri four times from January to May this year. Water would also be supplied to 5,000 acres of additional cultivable land this year." It may be mentioned that the state government has already prepared elaborate schemes to coordinate canals, wetlands and rivers to augment irrigation facilities during drought. Stressing on the issue, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced the Jalashree scheme. Following the Chief Ministers instruction, the state government has earlier started the Jal Dharo-Jal Bharo scheme with the objective of rainwater harvesting. The Jalatirtha scheme for minor irrigation has now been extended to the Sunderbans and the Hill areas as well.
