Kolkata: The Bolpur Civil and Criminal Court has issued arrest warrant against BJP leader Mukul Roy and Monirul Islam in connection with a triple murder that took place at Labhpur in Birbhum district in June 2010. The Birbhum district police had submitted charge-sheet in the case on December 4. The case dates back to June 3, 2010, when three brothers identified as Kotun Sheikh, Dhanu Sheikh and Tarun Sheikh were lynched at a kangaroo court that was convened on the issue of a dispute over wresting control of a sand mine located at Nabagram area in Labhpur. The family of the deceased had alleged that the then Forward Bloc leader Monirul Islam was responsible for the killing, as it was he who had given the call to host the kangaroo court. The lynching took place at his behest, they alleged. The Birbhum district police had submitted charge-sheet in the case against 30 persons in 2015, but the name of Monirul did not feature in it. The family members of the deceased subsequently moved Calcutta High Court challenging the charge-sheet and the latter directed the district police to conduct a fresh probe in the case. The police named Monirul in the supplementary charge-sheet along with BJP leader Mukul Roy, whom they have held responsible for abetment in the case. The supplementary charge-sheet has names of 23 people in the incident, including Monirul and Roy. Incidentally, Roy was a Trinamool Congress leader when the incident occurred. It may be mentioned that soon after the incident, Monirul had joined Trinamool Congress and won the Lok Sabha elections in 2011. Roy called the matter revenge politics on the part of Trinamool Congress, as he had joined BJP. "If he (Roy) has not committed any crime why should he be afraid? He can prove his innocence in the court," said Trinamool secretary general Partha Chatterjee.
