Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged people demonstrating against the implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Act to maintain cool and not to take law into their own hands. "Please do not take law into your own hands and remain cool. Please do not do anything that affects normal life of the citizens. I have full sympathy for the spontaneous agitation but it should be conducted in a peaceful and democratic way," she said, adding: "Do not do anything to destroy and damage the properties of the state." On returning to the city from Digha after attending the Bengal Global Business Conclave, Banerjee held a meeting at Nabanna on Friday. State Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha, Home Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay, Director General of Police Virendra, Commissioner of Police Anuj Sharma and Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Gyanwant Singh attended the meeting. Banerjee urged the police to be on high alert and take every step to maintain law and order and ensure that the incidents do not blow out of proportion. Police vigil in the city has been intensified and pickets have been posted at important road intersections. She once again reiterated that neither NRC nor the Citizenship Act will be implemented in Bengal. It may be mentioned that Banerjee is set to meet the partys MLAs and MPs on December 20, to discuss the blueprint to counter NRC and Citizenship Act. The statement of the Chief Minister came after the agitators put up roadblocks in different parts of Kolkata and the districts. In Kolkata, the demonstrators put up road blocks at Park Circus and Rajabazar. Traffic movement in Central and North Kolkata was badly hit as well. The demonstrations were withdrawn following intervention of senior officials. However, no incident of violence was reported in the city. The agitators, however, tried to set the Beldanga railway station in Murshidabad on fire and later damaged the Beldanga police station. They also put up road block at Uluberia, affecting traffic movement along National Highway 6. Some agitators pelted stones at Up Coromondol Express at Uluberia railway station. A motorman was injured after being hit by stones. Several long distance trains including East Coast Express, Mumbai Express and a couple of local trains were stopped at Uluberia station.
