ER cancels Assam bound trains in view of agitation

Kolkata: The Eastern Railway has cancelled Assam-bound trains till December 16, in view of the ongoing agitation against NRC and Citizenship Act. A press note issued by Eastern Railway states that 15959 Howrah-Dibrugarh Kamrup Express, scheduled to leave Howrah on December 13, 14, 15 and 16, will remain cancelled. 13175 Up Sealdah-Silchar Kanchenjungha Express, scheduled to leave Sealdah on December 14, will remain cancelled as well along with15956 Delhi-Dibrugarh Brahmaputra Mail commencing journey on December 13 and 14. 12503 Bengaluru Cantt-Agartala Humsafar Express commencing journey on December 13 will also remain cancelled. "All Assam-bound vehicles from North Bengal have stopped plying and services will be resumed only after restoration of normalcy," said the taxi drivers.

Meanwhile, the passengers who got stranded at the New Jalpaiguri railway station, returned to the city on Friday. Swapan Sengupta, who was supposed to attend a marriage ceremony of his cousin, said he had to come back as no transport is available beyond New Jalpaiguri. "Trains are not available and even taxis refused to go to Guwahati," he said. Anish Agarwala, who had left for Guwahati to meet his clients, had to come back because of the ongoing situation in Assam. "The taxi drivers in Siliguri told me not to go to the area as clashes are taking place between police and the agitators against Citizenship Act," he said. "All Assam-bound vehicles from North Bengal have stopped plying and services will be resumed only after restoration of normalcy," said the taxi drivers.
