Kolkata: Speaker Biman Banerjee on Friday said the incidents of attack on the doctors make him unhappy and also urged the people to be more sensitive to the doctors who are the saviours of lives. Banerjee was speaking that the inauguration of the centenary celebration of Dr R Ahmed Dental College and Hospital which was set up in 1920 by Dr R Ahmed, one of the forefathers of Indian dentistry. During his speech, Banerjee said that doctors are often compared to God and they must be treated with respect. Speaking on the occasion, the Speaker said that Dr R Ahmed Dental College and Hospital has the history of producing many top dentists who have working not only in India but also in abroad. Dental treatment in his early years had not been so advanced in the state and it has evolved over the years, Banerjee said. He also appreciated various health schemes introduced by the Mamata Banerjee government which eventually helped the people to avail treatment at various state run hospitals at free of costs. Chandrima Bhattacharya, Minister of state for health during the programme said that the 51 meter long foot over-bridge would be laid to connect the new and old buildings of R Ahmed Dental College and Hospital situated on the either side of AJC Bose road near Moulali. According to the minister the proposed over-bridge would be extremely handy for the hospital authorities to ferry patients from one building to other building. The hospital authorities often face problems to shift patients from one building to the other by crossing the busy AJC Bose road. Hence the dental college authorities had sent a proposal to the state government stressing on the need of a foot bridge over the AJC Bose road. The state health department has given a go-ahead with the project. As a part of a year-long celebration, scientific sessions would be held at the hospital where national-level speakers would take part. Symposiums would also be conducted on inter disciplinary dentistry and awareness camps would be held on oral cancer and other diseases throughout the year. Dr Raju Biswas, secretary of the Bengal chapter of the Indian Dental Association (IDA) said that they have organised 100 health camps in the state and 56,000 patients have been treated in the camps.
