Municipal Affairs dept looks to ensure uninterrupted supply of water

Kolkata: The state Municipal Affairs department is leaving no stones unturned to ensure that the stock and supply of water in the municipal areas across the state is not hampered by any means amidst lockdown to prevent spread of COVID-19. "We have already reviewed all the 28 water treatment plants under our jurisdiction and have assessed the quantity of chemicals required for each of them to ensure that the stock lasts at least for a month. A reasonable amount has already reached us and the rest are in transit," said Subrata Gupta, Principal Secretary of the state Municipal Affairs department. She has also instructed her officials to take suitable steps for smooth supply of water. The municipalities have been divided into groups based on their respective locations and senior officials have been given the task to supervise conservancy work in each group of such municipalities.

We have already started procurement of chemicals from our neighbouring states Odisha and Jharkhand. A reasonable amount has already reached us and the rest are in transit," said Subrata Gupta, Principal Secretary of the state Municipal Affairs department. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already instructed various departments to ensure that people who are cooped up in their own residences face no difficulty in availability of food grains, grocery items, fish, meat and eggs. She has also instructed her officials to take suitable steps for smooth supply of water. The urban local bodies have been instructed to make arrangements for sanitisation and conservancy. The cleaning of roads and drains are being done twice a day. The civic bodies have been asked to take steps so that protective gears like apron, gloves, mask etc are made available to the conservancy workers. "We have also centrally supplied some amount of such protective items to a number of municipalities," added Gupta. The municipalities have been divided into groups based on their respective locations and senior officials have been given the task to supervise conservancy work in each group of such municipalities. "All measures are in place so that work can be carried out in an organised manner as it is the need of the hour," a senior official of the department said.
