Kolkata: Many retail medicine shops and drugstores across the city are running out of stocks due to inadequate supply of medicines and also because of unethical hoarding by a section of people. The situation has become complicated as many people started buying medicines just to add to their stockpiles for future use. After some restrictions have been imposed by the state government and the entire state has gone into a virtual lockdown, people started fearing that there may be crisis of medicines and hence they are collecting medicines for up to next 4-5 months. This has led to a shortage of medicines at various medicine shops. In the past few days, the steady supply of medicines had been disrupted following the restrictions imposed by the government as many staff members involved in the supply of medicines at various levels faced difficulties. Due to transportation problems the supply of medicine also received a hit. It was also alleged that there were some instances where the people involved in the supply of medicines had been harassed. Sankha Roychoudhury, president of the Bengal Chemist and Druggist Association (BCDA) said as the transport system came to a standstill, the essential supply of medicines was also affected. "If there is a complete shutdown, how the medicines will be delivered to the retailers. Even, there was a problem to take medicines to the stockiests from the company. People engaged in the supply of medicines had faced difficulties. We have taken up the issues with the senior health department officials and police. The administration is extending us all supports. Medicines are now being supplied to the districts and to the city." "Some people are buying medicines for the next 6 months as a result some others are deprived. If the demands go up suddenly and the supply goes down there will be a crisis. The situation will be normal within next 7 days. All the necessary steps have been taken. There is nothing to spread panic. There will be no crisis of medicine," Roychoudhury added.
