Kolkata: Darjipara Sarbojanin Durgotsav Committee is supplying essential commodities to the residents of Ward 17 at a reasonable price. The essential commodities include rice, potatoes, onions and other vegetables. According to the members of the committee, since the lockdown has begun, prices of essential commodities have gone up unimaginably. Earlier, the committee had distributed hand sanitisers to the residents at a very low cost. Later, the members came up with the idea to bring essential commodities from Burdwan and sell them to the residents without any profit. Since few of them originally hail from Burdwan, they could easily get in touch with the farmers there and managed to arrange the supplies. The committee placed an application at the Burtolla police station for vehicular exemption pass in order to bring in the essential commodities. After the passes for two small goods carrier were issued, they went to Masagram, near Burdwan and got essential commodities in large quantities. Those were bought by the locals maintaining proper distance in the queue. Members of Darjipara Sarbojanin Durgotsav Committee have ensured that no gathering takes place while the residents come to buy the stuff. Not more than seven persons will be allowed to stand in queue. Also, the committee has determined the quantity to be allowed during purchase. "We have sold three kinds of rice and the prices are Rs 35, 40 and 50. Potatoes have been sold at a rate of Rs 15 per kg. Residents are happy to have the essential commodities at a cheap rate as prices for those in the markets are very high. We are just taking the actual price and the carrying cost," said Sandip Bose, member of the committee. The committee is also mulling to start selling fish and chicken. For that, members have begun searching for a place from where the items can be procured at a low cost.
