Corona cases go up to 21 in Bengal as first doctor tests positive in city

Kolkata: Four more including an anesthesiologist from a hospital in the city tested positive for Coronavirus on Sunday, taking the number of affected patients to 20 in the state so far. Meanwhile, a 66-year-old-man and a 44-year-old woman have also tested positive on Sunday. Incidentally, the two women who tested positive for the COVID-19 on Saturday have been taken to Beliaghata ID Hospital. All the patients had come in contact with the 66-year-old man from Nayabad, who had tested positive earlier. It was also learnt that two other patients who tested positive earlier are now in stable condition.

Kolkata: Four more including an anesthesiologist from a hospital in the city tested positive for Coronavirus on Sunday, taking the number of affected patients to 20 in the state so far. This is for the first time that a doctor has been affected with the virus in the state. He has been kept at the isolation ward of the hospital. It has been learnt that the doctor had returned to the city from Delhi on March 16 and joined duty at the hospital on the next day. He continued his duty till March 21, when he complained of lung related problems. A CT scan was performed which showed that he might have been affected with pneumonia. The doctors sent his swab samples to NICED, the report of which reached the Health department on Sunday. The department officials are trying to identify the people who might have come in close contact with the doctor in the past few days. The officials are also trying to ascertain if the virus had been transmitted to him in Delhi. The Health department has already initiated a probe to identify the people and patients the senior doctor had met. The health condition of the doctor is stated to be stable. Meanwhile, a 66-year-old-man and a 44-year-old woman have also tested positive on Sunday. They have been undergoing treatment at different hospitals with severe respiratory distress. The woman has been admitted to North Bengal Medical College and hospital. A 59-year-old man from Hooghlys Seoraphuli who was admitted to a private hospital in Salt Lake on Sunday tested positive for the virus taking the tally to 21. He had been suffering from fever and cough since March 16. The victim had respiratory problem as well. Incidentally, the two women who tested positive for the COVID-19 on Saturday have been taken to Beliaghata ID Hospital. The 76-year-old and 56-year-old patients had been kept at the Egra Superspecialty Hospital in East Midnapore. All the patients had come in contact with the 66-year-old man from Nayabad, who had tested positive earlier. All of them had attended a marriage ceremony at Egra recently. The Nayabad resident has been undergoing treatment at a private hospital and is in critical condition. Meanwhile, the first affected patient of Bengal, the 18-year-old son of a top bureaucrat who tested positive for the virus on March 17, has recovered and may soon be released from Beliaghata ID Hospital, where he has been kept under special isolation. According to sources at the hospital, a fresh swab test report of the teenager came in negative for the virus, which came as a great sigh of relief to the hospital authorities. Another swab test would be performed on the patient after 48 hours. If the report again comes in negative and the patient meets all the prerequisite parameters, the hospital may release him. It was also learnt that two other patients who tested positive earlier are now in stable condition. The swab samples of the patients would also be sent for test.
