Kolkata: A number of tourists who had gone to visit Uttarakhand from different parts of the state are suffering due to scarcity of resources and medicines, being cooped up in hotels because of the ongoing lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19. They have sought assistance from state administration to make arrangements in coordination with the Uttarakhand government, so that they can return home. Nine senior citizens including three women, all residents of Barrackpore in North 24-Parganas, are confined to their hotel rooms at Haldwani and are in urgent need of money to pay their hotel bills and most importantly, purchase of medicines. They had left Kolkata to visit Nainital on March 17. They cut their tour short and booked return tickets on March 23, but the lockdown was announced suddenly, following which they failed to return. "We suffer from age-related ailments like blood pressure, sugar, hypertension etc. and most of us are on regular medication. Our medicine stock is getting exhausted and we cannot venture out due to lockdown. We have been calling the Nabanna helpline many times since Saturday, but have got no response. We appeal earnestly to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to rescue us from this condition and arrange some transport to take us back home. We are ready to bear the expenses for our return," septuagenarian Tapan Dutta said. A family from Girish Park in North Kolkata, which had gone to visit Uttarkhand on March 18, is facing a similar crisis. They are stuck in a hotel at Kausani. "It is often raining here and the weather is extremely cold. The major problem that we are facing is non-availability of medicines. The app-based delivery system is not working. We all have age-related illness. My sister in-law is diabetic and needs insulin. Our stock will suffice for a maximum of two to three days. We are suffering a lot. We shall be grateful if there are some arrangements for rescuing us from this situation," said sexagenarian Sujato Sen. The Mukherjee family from Konnagar in Hooghly and the Rao family from Andul in Howrah are also in a similar situation and have been locked down at their hotels in Kausani. "The local administration has been kind enough and has made arrangements for ration. But non-availability of medicines is making us suffer a lot," said Kusal Rao of Andul, who had gone for a visit there along with his wife and son.
