This is the fifth time when the number of MBBS seats have been increased in the state since the Mamata Banerjee government came to power. Till 2011, there were only 900 MBBS seats in Bengal. With continuous efforts of the Chief Minister, it has now gone up to 4,000. It includes 3,250 in 19 state-run medical colleges while the remaining in six private medical colleges. Interestingly, the state had witnessed an increase of only 750 MBBS seats since Independence to 2011 while in just nine years of the Trinamool Congress government, the number of seats has increased by 3,100. The increase of MBBS seats will be a major boost at this critical time of Covid with 4,000 MBBS doctors joining medical colleges as interns every year. At present, there are more than 11,000 doctors in state-run hospitals while the number was only 4,500 in 2011. Similarly, the number of nurses has gone up to nearly 53,000 from 37,366 at government health establishments in the past nine years. Banerjee has repeatedly stressed the need for more doctors in the state and accordingly her government has taken steps to ensure a steady increase in the number of MBBS seats.
