Open top double-decker bus trial across Kolkata

The West Bengal tourism development corporation (WBTDC), and the Housing Infrastructure development corporation (Hidco) conducted a trial run of the open-top double-decker bus on Sunday, taking a ride to all the tourist spots across New Town.

Officials said that the daily tourist ride on the bus to be conducted by WBTDC is expected to start off from the first week of February onwards after finalizing the fares and other modalities.

Officials said that the route on which the bus ride will be conducted in New Town has been chalked out. Presently, WBTDC runs a double-decker bus ride through the heritage spots of Kolkata.

On Sunday, the trial run of the bus ride started off from the Biswa Bangla gate ticket counter site as the first spot was Rabindra Tirtha, with a beautiful view of the entire complex from the top of the double-decker bus.

As the bus took from one spot to another passing by various landmarks, Hidco chairman Debashis Sen acted as the tour guide for those attending the trial run. After Rabindra Tirtha, the bus moved on passing by the upcoming naval aircraft museum site and important IT zones and crossing the Rhino model street furnitures and Aliah University smart bus stand before it reached the latest sensation of New Town, the New Town Coffee House.

The bus came back on the main arterial road as the next tourist stop was the Mothers’ wax museum. Tourists will be visiting the museum after which the bus will take tourists to the upcoming Vivek Tirtha.

From Vivek Tirtha, the bus moved on towards Eco Park as one could have a splendid view of the replica of the ‘Seven Wonders of the World’. The bus then moved on keeping the Eco Park waterbody on its left side which had a splendid view from the open-air top of the bus along with a view of the solar dome as it then reached the Eiffel tower replica at Eco Park. From there the bus ride returned and ended at the Biswa Bangla gate crossing.

Though the trial run was about of one and a half hours, officials said that the duration of the bus ride will be about five hours when the actual bus ride will be conducted as tourists will be visiting all the spots and will spend some time there.
