Eminent film and theatre actress Swatilekha Sengupta has passed away in Kolkata. She was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city due to kidney-related problems and breathed her last today at the age of 71.

She was undergoing treatment at a private hospital for the past 24 days and passed away at around 3 pm.

Several films, television and theatre personalities have paid tribute to the veteran actress, calling her death a huge loss. The contribution of Swatilekha and her husband Rudraprasad Sengupta towards Bengali theatre is unparalleled. Rudraprayag and Swatilekha have a daughter named Sohini.

Sohini is also a popular artist and is known for her strong acting. Sohini said, "My mother was a great human being and a great artist. Her work will always be remembered. She was a gold medalist. She helped a lot of people."

Swatilekha started her career with a theatre in 1970. Swatilekha played the role of Bimala in Satyajit Ray`s film Ghare Baire, based on the novel by Rabindranath Tagore, she was a part of films like `Bela Seshe`, `Belashuru`, `Dharmajuddha`. She was also honoured with the `Paschim Banga Natya Akademi Award` and the `Sangeet Natak Akademi Award` for her contribution to Indian theatre as an actor. She ran the Nandikar Theater Group with her husband and daughter.
