Labour minister Moloy Ghatak has expressed concern over the growing incidents of accidents in Durgapur Steel Plant, part of Steel Authority of India (SAIL). Few days ago, three contract workers were killed and one critically hurt after liquid hot metal spilled on them at the blast furnace. Yesterday, one contract worker, Bibhuti Biswas suffered over 60 per cent burn injuries due to electrocution while working in the bloom and billet mill of Durgapur Steel Plant. He was first taken to DSP main Hospital and then to The Mission Hospital in Bidhan Nagar. The contract worker was electrocuted while doing the repairing job, said sources. Bedbandhu Roy, DGM and COC of DSP said that a highlevel team will probe the incident. Already, three probe teams are working separately for the previous accident in which three contractor workers were killed. “It is really a matter of concern if regular accidents occur in a big steel plant like DSP of SAIL. The company should ensure safety measures for its workers. The inspector of factories will investigate the incidents,” Moloy Ghatak added. Abhijit Ghatak has recently taken charge of the contractor workers union in DSP, ASP and ISP.Sourav Dutta, joint secretary of CITU said that no senior officers or supervisors were present when these accidents occurred. The increase in accidents is worrying. The contract workers are concerned about their safety, he added. INTUC president Debashish Choudhury said that the SAIL should focus on the issue of safety of iats workers as regular incidents of accidents are creating a fear amongst the contractor workers.
